New Year, New Goals

January 1, 2020. The start of a new year, a new decade, and with that comes new beginnings. Before ringing in the new year, many of us asked ourselves: What do I want to accomplish in the coming year? How can I better myself and the world around me? What am I going to write in my 365-page book? We treat this day like it’s a new start, often saying new year new me, but why do many of us choose the first of the year? Why do we hold many of our goals and new beginnings for the new year when we could start them whenever we want? Maybe it’s the inner procrastinator in all of us or maybe it’s the day 1/1 that gets to us. Whatever it may be, we all have goals for ourselves and want to accomplish something in this coming year. However, by the end of the year, we realize that all of the goals that we set for ourselves only lasted a few weeks. Based on a study, it takes anywhere from 18 to 254 days for an individual to form a new habit. So with these new goals toward a new you, you may want to reflect and assess. Here are some tips to keep in mind this coming year:

  1. Keep your resolutions simple
  2. Focus on one change at a time
  3. Keep a good support system
  4. Try a different approach. If plan A didn’t work you still have 25 more letters.
  5. Don’t give up! You are in charge don’t let yourself down.

Yes, with a new year comes new beginnings, but there is such a thing as a new day. As long as you are doing something, you are growing and learning along the way. The goals that you are hoping for may not turn out the way you want, but pushing yourself to the next step and never giving up will give you the motivation to keep going. You’ve got this, you are awesome, and there is so much in store for you in this new year.
